It’s all about flying a kite
OK….if you’re wanting to try, here’s a little motivation for you… My kids started kiting at 6 years old. In 2005, average kiteboarder’s age is 38. In 2004, a 10-year-old kid won in the PKRA Women’s World championships. I’ve met many kiters 60-70+ in age. A small Nordic girl was the first person to set the kiteboarding speed record. When we go kiting we often go with a mother of two who is in her 50s. What it is, power kiting can be enjoyed by many and it has a few pre-requisites.
However, with that said, we must first reveal three facts often overlooked by new comers:
1 – Power kiting is a sport and is not for everyone! Many who show up at our door have a mis-understanding that kiteboarding is a ride and we can just take them out for an afternoon of fun. You will never learn when all you do is watch someone do it a few times before you try it yourself. If you want to pursue the sport, there are definitive training steps you will need to be coached and guided on.
2- You’re going to crash Your safety should always be the number one factor when pursuing any sport, including kiteboarding. Expecting that you’re going to crash kites and fall, it is a must for one to keep a positive mental state. There is a learning curve, and most must first fall before they can get on their feet. Keep your learning aptitude strong and you’ll do well
3- Girls learn faster We’ve found women and girls have a faster learning curve than most guys. In our studies, we’ve nailed it down to finesse, center of gravity, and study skills. Overall, females have more balance and finesse. Since kiting is more about the “Zen” than the strength, it does well by not muscling the gear around. Their natural lower center of gravity increases their ability to sustain rides. And, when we teach them something….they listen well and absorb what was being taught (sorry guys).
You need to fuse your skills with other sports!
In just a few years, kite flyers, wakeboarders, surfers, skaters, skiers, snowboarders, sailors and paragliders have fused in their skills with kiteboarding. This sport requires some passion, desire and commitment.

My far better half (wife) kindly bought me a really excellent pair of binoculars for Christmas. A fantastic pair of Leica Ultravid HD binoculars which must have cost a fortune.
They are truly wonderful field glasses. This particular pair are amazingly compact and lightweight making them easy to carry around in my pocket. The lenses are coated with a special hydrophobic coating that repels dirt and moisture. When I’ve used them in the rain water droplets simply roll off the lenses and they are exceptionally easy to clean.
Recently, I was having a conversation with a colleague about binoculars and we began to list the various ways that we each use them. For my part, I routinely use my binoculars to watch and identify birds in my back garden. Another way in which I regularly use my binoculars is viewing ships in the English channel, which I can see from the back of my house. The shipping lanes in the English channel are always bustling with a variety of merchant ships headed either towards Europe or off into the Atlantic.
Walking on the south downs is another of my favourite pass time and I’m never without my binoculars. Being high up on the Sussex hills provides and excellent vantage point from which I can identify many famous land marks along the south downs way. My binoculars also enable me to watch wildlife from a distance without causing disturbance. I’ve quietly watched hare’s, badgers, foxes and even a family of stoats playing in a distant field one late afternoon.
My colleague is keen on air shows, ballooning and sports so he uses his binoculars to give him a better view. He goes to all the air shows that are held during the summer months at most airfields throughout the southern United Kingdom. He particularly enjoys the ballooning events that take place in the west country and his binoculars provide an excellent view of balloon pilots enjoying the odd glass of champagne as they drift over the green countryside. He tells me that his favourite place to use his binoculars is at footbal matches. He says it can be quite difficult to keep up with the fast play but his binoculars give him a detailed view of the players expressions and add to the drama of the game.
If you don’t have a pair of binoculars I suggest you get some. Don’t go spending loads of money on your first pair, unless you have loads of money to spend. I can guarantee they will open up a whole new view of the world around you.
